About

About the Bullying Prevention Institute

Bullying is pervasive, subtle, and hurtful; not only to students, but also to their families, their schools, and to society. The learned behavior in childhood can continue into adulthood and the workplace. All forms of bullying have an impact on a child’s self-esteem and on the ability of a child to learn effectively.

On October 4th and 5th, Highmark Healthy High 5, an initiative of the Highmark Foundation, will present a summit through the Bullying Prevention Institute at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This two-day event will feature renowned expert Dr. Dan Olweus and serve as a kick off to a statewide discussion on the national crisis of bullying.

In addition to Dr. Olweus, this unique summit brings leading national and international experts on the topic of bullying prevention together with educators, school administrators and legislative leaders from Pennsylvania to explore strategies and best practices currently in use. Whether you’re building on an existing bullying prevention program or are in need of the basic framework to adopt such a program in your school, this two-day event, moderated by Susan Linder, Ph.D., MLS, is structured to provide the tools schools need to address bullying.

Almost a third of American children in grades six through ten are directly involved in serious, frequent bullying.

More than two thirds of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying, with a high percentage of students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective.
